Quick Answer
An effective lost pet flyer has one job: make someone who sees it immediately pick up the phone. That means one dominant photo, one dominant phone number, and a reward mention — all visible from 10 feet away. Everything else is secondary.
What Is a Lost Pet Flyer?
The difference between a lost pet flyer that generates tips and one that doesn't comes down to three things: photo quality, phone number size, and where it's posted.
Most lost pet flyers fail because owners try to include too much information. A person driving past a telephone pole has 1–2 seconds to register your flyer. In that time, they can process: the animal's face, the word LOST, and a phone number. That's it.
This page provides two versions — a **print flyer** for physical posting in a 1-mile radius, and a **digital/social version** sized for Facebook, Instagram, and Nextdoor sharing. Both are free and designed for maximum impact in the moments when every hour matters.
For a longer-format printable with full details, see our [Lost Pet Poster template](/templates/lost-pet-poster-template).
When Do You Need This?
What to Include
1. Above everything: the non-negotiables
- LOST [SPECIES] in the largest font on the page
- A clear, recent, close-up photo — the animal's face fills the frame
- Your phone number in the second-largest font — readable from 15 feet
- REWARD OFFERED — even without an amount, this doubles response rates
2. Supporting details (smaller, below the photo)
- Pet name and whether they respond to it (shy pets often won't come to strangers)
- Breed, colour, approximate weight
- Any distinctive markings (white chest, torn ear, limps on left front leg)
- Last seen: date and specific location (cross streets)
- Whether the pet is friendly or fearful (this matters — people need to know not to chase)
3. For digital/social versions
- High contrast design — white text on dark background performs well on mobile screens
- Your location/neighbourhood in the caption, not just on the image
- Tag the post with your city name and local hashtags
- Include a specific ask: 'Please share — every share extends our reach'
Legal Notes by State
Microchip first: Before posting flyers, call your microchip registry (HomeAgain, PetLink, AKC Reunite) and mark your pet as missing. Also call every shelter, rescue, and vet clinic within 10 miles — phone calls beat flyers for shelter reunions because staff may not check online registries. File a report at PetFBI.org and NextDoor.
Flyer placement: Telephone poles, community notice boards, pet store windows, vet clinic boards, dog park entrances, and the entrance/exit of any grocery store within 1 mile. Aim for 50–100 flyers posted within the first 6 hours. Laminate at high-value locations (park entrances) to weather-proof them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Should I include the reward amount on the flyer?+
No. 'Reward offered' is enough — it motivates people without anchoring to a specific amount. Listing a large amount can attract dishonest responses or theft attempts. Listing a small amount can reduce motivation. Let callers know the amount when they phone.
What size should I print the flyers?+
Standard letter (8.5x11) or A4 for general posting. Print a few in A3/tabloid (11x17) for high-traffic spots — park entrances, community boards, grocery store entrances. Larger format = visible from further away. Always print in colour; black and white significantly reduces recognisability.
My pet is shy and won't approach strangers. What should I say on the flyer?+
Include a clear note: 'Very shy — please do NOT approach or chase. Call us immediately with the location.' A frightened pet will run from strangers attempting to catch them, and a tip about location is far more valuable than a failed catch attempt. Also mention any food they respond to (e.g., 'will come for cheese').
How is this different from the Lost Pet Poster template?+
This page focuses on two flyer formats — a print version optimised for telephone pole posting and a digital/social version optimised for sharing online. The Lost Pet Poster template is a longer-format document with more fields for detailed information. Use this flyer for rapid deployment in the first hours; use the poster for more complete information at community boards and vet clinics.
